The World's Five Best Places For Gaming Jobs In 2021
A British writer covering indie and retro gaming, esports, and more.
A small British town makes a surprise entry on the list of best gaming job locations.
The last 12 months have been catastrophic for businesses around the world, and the coming year doesn't look all that positive either, but gaming has proved incredibly resilient–and it's forecast to grow rapidly in the coming years. While certain markets are growing their video games industries at a remarkable rate, five locations have been named as best for gaming jobs in 2021 and beyond.
The Career Salaries and Insights report, compiled by global gaming recruitment group TechNET Immersive, explored the areas of the world where budding developers, designers, animators, and writers are given the best opportunities to get their foot on the employment ladder.
While California and its Silicon Valley has been named the best place to get a job in the games industry–no surprise there–it's joined by Stockholm, Vancouver, London, and the sleepy British town of Guildford. The aftermath of Brexit and the ongoing lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic might be hitting most British industries hard, but its games developers are flourishing.
Although it's the biggest surprise on the list, Guildford–which has a population of just over 77,000–has made a name for itself as a British gaming hub. Its humble beginnings in video game production can be traced back to the creation of Bullfrog Productions by Peter Molyneux; the studio went on to create incredible titles like Populous, Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Syndicate, and Dungeon Keeper.
Vancouver also offers plenty of employment opportunities for game creators.
After Bullfrog's acquisition by EA in 1995 and Molyneux's departure in 1997, spin-off companies such as Lionhead Studios went on to make Black & White and the Fable series. Now, Guildford hosts developers including Hello Games (No Man's Sky), Supermassive Games (Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology), Fireproof Studios (The Room), and Criterion Games (Burnout, Need for Speed), and there's plenty more where these come from.
Meanwhile, Stockholm is home to DICE (Battlefield), Mojang (Minecraft), Experiment 101 (Biomutant), and Hazelight (A Way Out); Vancouver hosts the likes of EA (FIFA, NHL), while London boasts Rockstar (GTA, Red Dead Redemption), King (Candy Crush). All members of the top five also offer hundreds of indie and mobile developers between them.
On a wider scale, TechNET Immersive found that the western states of the U.S. still provide more roles than Europe (31% vs. 24%), but the entire eastern U.S., even with big-hitting cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia, only offers as many roles as the entire city of London (16% of global gaming employees each).
